PALM OIL: the bigger picture

PALM OIL PLANTATIONS, THE ILLUSION of SUSTAINABILTY…. Environmentalists see the establishment of oil palm plantations as a new threat to the world's largest rainforests and their biodiversity. The potential for palm oil plantations in the Brazilian Amazon is vast: the Woods Hole Research Center estimates that 2.283 million square kilometers (881,000 sq miles) of forest land in the region is suitable for oil palm, an area far greater in extent than that which could be converted for soy (390,000 sq km) or sugar cane (1.988 million sq km). Woods Hole calculates this area of forest locks up some 42.5 billion tons (gigatons) of carbon in aboveground biomass, or roughly six times 2006 global emissions... Read more [...]

Reconceive Environment and Sustainability.

Reconceive Environment and Sustainability. Martin Luther King Jr. taught us, by word and example, that any movement — any culture —will fail if it cannot paint a picture of a world that people will want to go to. As others have said, his speech was not called “I Have a Nightmare.” For decades, our culture has struggled with two addictions, to oil and to despair. It’s pretty clear by now that we can’t kick one of those habits without kicking the other. Yet, for many Americans, perhaps most of us, thinking about the future conjures up images of “Blade Runner,” “Mad Max” or Cormac McCarthy’s “The Road”: a post-apocalyptic dystopia stripped of nature. We seem drawn to that flame. It’s a dangerous fixation. Think how children and young people must feel today, growing up in a time when so many adults seem to accept, with a shrug, only darkness ahead... Read more [...]

Humans change the world! What drought are you talking about?

Humans change the world! What drought are you talking about? A drought is a period of unusually persistent dry weather that persists long enough to cause serious problems such as crop damage and or water supply shortages. The severity depends upon the degree of moisture deficiency, the duration, and the size of the affected area. The major effects of climate change on water systems take place through changes in the hydrological cycle, basically the balance between temperature, and rainfall. Whilst some regions may have higher rainfalls this can evaporate through sustained increases in temperature... Read more [...]

Humans Change the World ! Ice Melting and Oceans Rising! Is it True?

Hey! Ice Melting and Oceans Rising! Is it True? This is GreenDustries’ fourth blog following our blog titled “Humans Change the World!” and is part of the series of the same name that started with that post. With the posting form serious Scientific Sources such as NASA and others to substantiate our articles we are bringing you a new aspect of "How Humans are Changing the World". Today we will approach the "melting ice's poles": the cause and effects... Read more [...]

Humans Change the World ! All these Earthquakes, who or what is responsible?

All these Earthquakes, who or what is responsible? In our blog from November 24, 2011, GreenDustries discussed the fact that “Humans Change the World”. What took 4 billion years to evolve is vanishing in the blink of an eye... Read more [...]

What’s under our feet? The Earth’s structure is a bit like an egg. Did you know?

The Earth's structure is a bit like an egg. Did you know? To be clear in our explanation of what cause "Climate Change" and what it's have to do with us, we need to start with the real beginning: Planet Earth. Everything happen there and to grasp what is our challenge we need to know exactly what we are talking about. Physical life start and finish here. "In the very beginning of earth's history, this planet was a giant, red hot, roiling, boiling sea of molten rock - a magma ocean. Read more [...]

Humans Change the World ! “Climate Change” What does it mean to me? What is it caused by?

The Industrial Revolution brought us Climate Change. After the Industrial Revolution we became a society of “instant gratification”. The industrial revolution made our life very easy and at the same time is destroying our planet. From the mining for commodities like: minerals, metals and rocks, let's not forget all the underground nuclear explosions and the pumping of oil, our planet is looking more and more like “Swiss Cheese” and now it is letting us know through: earthquakes, volcanoes and the increase of Co2. The time to change is here and now! The Industrial Revolution was a process of change from an agrarian, handicraft economy to one dominated by industry and machine manufacturing. It began in England in the 18th century... Read more [...]

Humans Change The World! How Many Species We Are Losing?

What took 4 billion years to evolve is vanishing in the blink of an eye. "For millions of years all humans, early and modern alike, had to find their own food. They spent a large part of each day gathering plants and hunting or scavenging animals. Then, within just the past 12,000 years, our species, Homo sapiens, made the transition to producing food and changing our surroundings. We have been so successful that we have inadvertently created a turning point in the history of life on Earth", says the Smithsonian Institution's Human Origins Program. Here are some examples of Biodiversity state of being that GreenDustries chose to talk to you about. There are 4 different forms of life and we want to explain their places in the Ecosystem, in our lives: the Mammals, the Plants, the Birds and Reptiles. The United Nations General Assembly aims to engage people all around the world in protecting life on Earth. Biodiversity is not just about plants, animals and insects, it is about life - it underpins our survival on this planet, the importance of biodiversity for our health, wealth... Read more [...]
